SharePoint 2010 inter-server communications question

IN preparation to try and use VM for SharePoint 2010 migration, my VM infrastructure team has asked me how the SharePoint servers communication with each other.

The main thing they want to know is if the communication is Uni-Cast, Multi-cast, or something else?

The only thing I have found online is this reference

"Note that when load-balancing the front-end servers, keep in mind that NLB operating in unicast mode with a single NIC will prevent inter-host communications, possibly interfering with the functionality of the farm. In this situation, it's usually best to implement the NLB cluster in Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) multicast mode (provided your switch vendor supports this). Alternatively, you can use a third-party hardware load-balancing solution."

Does that mean they communicate in multicast mode?

Office web apps is working in Chrome not in IE

When I attempt to open a document using office web apps in IE, its throwing error like "sorry there was a problem and we can't open this document", I I open the same document using google Chrome I can able to open and edit the document too?

I have a scenario of creating a form, where I need to cascade a dropdown list from another dropdown list. When I try to click on the customize form option in the customize list group in list tab I am getting the following alert :

"Microsoft Infopath2010 is required to use this feature."

how to solve this issue

SPTimerV4 service stops responding

I have experienced my timer service issue for the last 2 months.  It runs along just fine for a while and then I start receiving the "One or more servers is not responding" error.   I've looked through the SharePoint and system logs there are no indications of failure, it just stops responding.  The last job to run is usually the scheduled unpublish.  I have rebooted the system and even ran the SP conifg wizard again but the issue continues to crop up.  The service says it's running but no timer jobs are being run on the server.  Also, if I try to restart the service it hangs on stopping the service and never comes back.

Unable to upload a document to SharePoint library using Internet Explorer - works in other browsers

The upload a file option has stopped working for me - but only with Internet Explorer. Works with the same file in Firefox into the same library.  Internet Explorer version 10.0.9200.16618 Update version 10.0.6

This has worked for some time so I suspect some update has changed something on the I.E. side.

my site shared documents

Hello. we are migrating sharepoint 2007 to 2010 (new server). content appears to migrate just fine. except (of course):

mysite content seems to be all there. each user can go to mysite/my content and see everything. but colleagues can no longer see other user's stuff. so a colleague of mine can not even see my shared folder.

in 2007, as administrator, I was expected to be able to upload things to individual mysites, so the web policy was put in to do that. I found that same web policy in 2010, but still I can not see others' content either.

so I'm suspecting I have some security setting somewhere that's not right. but I don't have a clue where to look. I've seen other threads that talk about the app pool in IIS, but since in SP 2007 mysites were under the main root, the migration has used the same approach. so I'd assumed that the app pool was already ok since everyone can get into SP and go to their mysite and that I just have some SP admin thing off.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.     George

Hi everybody

I have a intranet site on a specific port.we extended this intranet site in another port for my form base users(It is for my internet users to connect form base not by my AD users).now I have a problem in publishing via ISA 2006.My form base url is like:http://My Public ISA server IP:Port/_layouts/customLogin/SignInform.aspx.but I can not Publish this site with this format.I can Publish the url like:

http://My Public ISA server IP:Port.Please guied me how I can Achive this.

In fact I want to publish a sharepoint Site(Form base) with this url http://My Public ISA server IP:Port/_layouts/customLogin/SignInform.aspx via ISA 2006.AAM also is configured in my Site .How Can I Implement this?

SharePoint 2010 access denied on the whole web application

Came in this morning to find that all users besides farm and site collection admins are denied access to all document libraries. Users can access the root folder of the libraries but not any documents or folders there within. Nothing has changed that we know of. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

  • We are running classic authentication on that web app.
  • Checked master pages and style libraries for anomalies.
  • Ensured services.
  • Checked user policies for the web app.

I have run out of ideas...

Central Admin - Could Not Load File

Hi all, 

All of the sudden when trying to access Central Admin on my SP 2010 server, the page errors out and I get this:

Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationPages.Administration, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

This server has been fairly static and no other updates or upgrades have been installed recently (last Windows updates on 6/12 and I was able to access Central Admin last week).

Setting a Sharepoint 2010 Development box with Hyper V-VMs

I attempting to setup my new SP2010 development box to get some hands on experience in Administration, Configuration and development.

Here my setup :

Host Machine : Win2K8 R2 Enterprise with HYPER-V Role enabled.

What I wanted to do was create two VM suggested be MSDN but I have an alternative tutorial which sounds interesting as well.

1)Hyper V VM for SharePoint Server 2010 Install

2)Hyper V VM for Domain Controller SQL 2008 R2 with AD support

MSDN tutorial suggest at the end the following :

You could run a fully functional domain infrastructure on a setup installation such as the following example installation: Two virtual computers, each with 2 GB of RAM

  • Domain controller and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 running on one computer

  • SharePoint Server 2010 and two Web applications (including Central Administration) running on another computer

 

Sharepoint-tutorial.net Tutorial suggest the following :

We are going to setup a SharePoint Server 2010 development environment containing two servers:

  • SharePoint Server
    Database Server
  • Active Directory

We don’t deploy a single server with the built-in database. Instead we are using SQL Server 2008 R2 so this deployment can be scaled out to create two- and three-tier farm topologies if necessary1. This guide shows you how to create a closed environment with an Active Directory on a separate box. If you already have an Active Directory you can use the existing one for your installation.

 

Which one does every1 suggest to gain the most out of it in order learn Administration, Configuration and development Senarios for SP 2010?

Cannot login into Sharepoint 2010 site collection

I recently installed a SharePoint 2010 server. After creating a site collection I can login using the domain administrator account but I cannot login with the user account that I set up to be the site collection administrator. I made the BACKCONNECTIONHOSTNAMES registry modification and restarted IIS but that did not fix the problem. It still shows 'access denied 'to both the primary and secondary site collection administrator accounts. Both accounts are set up as standard users in AD. What am I missing?

Subsite Lookup field for Main Teamsite List

I have a teamsite with multiple subsites for various functions that.  I want to create a list within the main teamsite that I can use within the subsites.  My main goal is to be able to find the main list as a lookup field in a subsite list.  I do not want to use a web view or part.  Site columns do not seem to be the answer either.

External access to My Sites and Portal - no reauthentication

We have a very common issue - we have a SharePoint 2010 Portal and My Sites on separate web applications. Users have access interally tohttp://portal and http://mysites and login automatically using windows authentication. We have published the sites externally ashttp://portal.domain.com and http://mysites.domain.com but the challenge is that users have to reauthenticate when they move from one application another.

Is there anyway to solve this issue without the purchase of UAG?

SharePoint 2010 STSADM Import Fails

Hi,
I do use export and import operations in stsadm. I get this error message when I try import. I haven't figure it out what might cause this issue. If anybody has same issue, we can discuss here. Thanks.

document id not showing

Hi,
We have document library with Thousands of documents.
When I upload new document to same library I  do not see document ID.
I do not see any column by name Document ID.
Also Is there a way to apply document ID to exisiting documents without taking any action. We don't want to change document properties.
The feature is enabled and both timer jobs have been run successfully. I have also reset IIS.

Why are ribbon controls disabled even with full control?

I have full control of both of my sites however the controls on the ribbon are disabled. If I use the drop down menu on the library or list item I can utilize those controls. Is there a setting I disabled? The sites have been set-up for about 6 months and now all of a sudden the controls are greyed out.

After deinstalling the patch the Web Part is displayed correctly again.

Our SharePoint Server has the Feb. 2013 CU installed.

This also happens to other Web Parts we manually updated via SharePoint Designer.

Any suggestion what’s going wrong?

SQL Server 2012 Cummulative update 4

Hi,

We are developing a BI Solution using BIDS 2010 and we are running SQL Server 2012 now with Cummlative Update 4 on our Test Sharepoint server which is running in Mixed mode and our reports are being deployed to the Sharepoint Server. Everything was running fine until we installed Cummlative Update 4 we can now no longer Deploy our BIDS 2010 SSRS .RDL files onto the Sharepoint site we get the following error.

Report Server has encountered a SharePoint error.
---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.SharePointException: Report Server has encountered a SharePoint error.
---> Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: List data validation failed.
---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: List data validation failed.

We can deploy to Production fine which has not had the Update applied yet.

So is this just a case of we need to install the Cummlative Update as well on our Development PC's and it will do something to our BIDS Installation ?

April CU13 unexpected version

Dear All,

Our SharePoint Server 2010 server (single server) farm is at this level 14.0.6106.5002. To my understanding it is SP1 with June CU 2011.

Now we would like to upgrade the server to level April 13 CU. I have therefore followed this linkhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;2775353 and request the hotfix.

The file I downloaded is 462150_intl_x64_zip.exe

Yesterday I tried to apply the CU and I got an error "unexpected version".

I believe that I have downloaded the right file to update the firm, but I'm not sure why I get the error.

Could you please help?
