Hi TechNet Community
Having been instructed to post this question in the TechNet forums, please see below verbatim (from the answers.microsoft.com forum)
While I realize that the Document Information Panel in Office 2016 apps has been deprecated (according to KB3092185,) it is a vital feature
for our company and I'm sure for many others for effective EDM. Despite the annoying workaround to use Backstage to set the properties, there seem to be a number of bugs in the process still:
Scenario 1: You create a custom document content type in SharePoint that has a lookup field that draws from a SharePoint list.
Problem 1: When you create a new document based on the content type, you cannot click the [Show Details] button until the document has been saved to the library. Once the document has been saved,
you can go back and set the metadata then re-save.
Scenario 2: You create a custom document content type in SharePoint that has a required lookup field that draws from a SharePoint list.
Problem 2: When trying to save the document, you receive the "This file cannot be saved because some properties are missing or invalid." error. Remember our problem from above? You can't click the
[Show Details] button to select the missing properties until the file is saved. Catch-22. No workaround other than to edit the content type to not require the lookup field.
Scenario 3: Similar to Scenario 1, you create a custom document content type with a lookup field (that doesn't need to be required) but you also upload a custom macro-enabled template.
Problem 3: You may have guessed it; you can't click the [Show Details] button.
I need to clarify though, you actually can click the [Show Details] button...it just doesn't actually do anything. There is no error displayed, nor any visual indication to inform you that
there is something wrong and that the web dialog box can't be displayed (for whatever reason.)
Having tested this on a number of installs, I'm fairly confident that this is a general issue and not specifically related to our/my setup. I'll happily concede if this is not the case.
I've already voted for bringing back the DIP on the Microsoft Word UserVoice: 9748581-missing-document-panel-in-word-2016
Anyone out there with the same issues or able to replicate them? Unfortunately, our entire Office 2016 rollout has been halted due to the deprecation of the DIP. (With it being an Office 365 subscription, there is a very short timeline to get this
resolved before Office 2016 is forced on our users.)
Thanks in advance,
Rob
