Host Named Site Collection (HNSC)

Host Named Site Collection (HNSC) has few benefit at the same time lot of trouble?

I have few question for the experts who is really associated with planning phase for global top level enterprise.

  1. Do any global top level enterprise (e.g. having user base of more that 0.1 million) use it frequently?
  2. In that case how many site collection practically they can keep under a web application? I know limit is 100,000. But in reality how much?
  3. AAM is not possible in HNSC, then how do people handle that situation?
  4. I know Microsoft himself using HNSC for hosting, but practically for which kind (Zone) of application companies are using HNSC.
  5. Is it freequetly used for SharePoint 2010 on-premise application also?

Please share your thought on this.

Thanks in advance.

UPS Service Account from which domain in a two way trust scenario?

I have a two way trust between Domain A and Domain B. A Sharepoint server resides in Domain B. I want to import users from Domain A and I'm about to set up a UPS. I know I have to grant Replicate Directory Changes to the UPS account in Domain A, but can the UPS Account be a Domain B account or must it be a Domain A account? Id prefer it to be a Domain B account

Thanks

why I am always prompt to Save or Open a word file when click on a filename in SharePoint 2010 lib?

$

in Site Collection features, I deactivated "Open documents in client application by default "

in Web App General settings I set "Browser File Handling" to "Permissive"

Then I created a library

in library settings >advanced settings > Open documents in browser is set to "Open in Browser"

Upload a document, click on the file name, it still asks me if I want to Open this file

I thought with the above settings, the file should open directly without prompting

Strangely, once I click Open in the dialog to open the file once, then any subsequent click on any new files doesn't prompt anymore

In an old library when clicking on a newly uploaded document, it just opens without prompting

Can any one explain this behaviour?

What can I do to make the file open directly?

Sharepoint 2010 - Can not open documents for editing when opened from a link. SSL only

Sharepoint 2010 - Can not open documents for editing when opened from a link.

The document opens with following : (Server read-only – this document was opened from a server in read-only mode. [Edit Document]  )

When we click on edit document we get the following error: (A problem occurred while connecting to the server. If the problem continues, contact your administrator.)

If we open the same document by browsing to the document within Sharepoint, we are able to check the document out, open it for editing, save the document back and check it in.

Here is our current environment.

Client: Windows 7 sp1, office 2010 pro plus sp1, Client PC is fully patched through 6/29/2013.

WFE server: windows 2008 R2 64 bit, sp1,  Sharepoint 2010 sp1 cu April 2013. WFE server is fully patched.

Backend (SQL server) Windows 2008 64 bit sp1, SQL 2008 R2, Backup server is fully patched

Domain Controller, Windows 2008 R2 Sp1, fully patched functioning clean.

We have the servers cloned, wrapped in a software firewall sandbox.

More information:  We wanted to make our site accessible on the internet and we did so using SSL. Our staff was having issues with links and shortcuts referencing internal server names over HTTP. In order to reduce confusion we removed all http (port 80) access to our Sharepoint site.

We do not have WebDav installed as a feature in IIS anywhere.

Internet Options-Connections-LAN settings-Automatically detect Settings – unchecked.

Internet Options-Security-User authentication-automatically logon as the current user-checked (on several tabs)

The server has been added to the trusted sites.

The shortcut to our site is formatted like this:  https://host.domain.com/....../document.docx

The path to the document is less than 80 characters.

Added my SP server in AuthForwardServerList to the registry

We get the same results both internally and externally

My guess… it has something to do with the way we implemented SSL only. Everything else seems to work just fine.   We need this fixed so that we can get workflows implemented.

Change to SQL Alias

I've running the farm with a named instance  - and I would like to switch to a SQL alias

I've created the SQL alias on the WFE ...but how do I tell SP to use this instead?

Signing into SharePoint takes me to default/home page?

I do not know what happened to my environment but it appears that did! When I sign into SharePoint, no matter FBA or AD, it always goes to the default/home page and never even looks at the referrer?  Any thoughts to what could be happening? This has become a REAL PITA!  :(

migrating a site to a new site collection, on the same server

i everyone, i have some troubles moving a site, maybe you could help?

The whole point is to change the database hosting the site, because this site gets too big to be handled by the main database.

so, i made an export with stsadm -o.

i laso created a new DB, with higher values than the main one, and a new site collection.

i then reimported everything.

Here, my first problems arose:some files didn't transfer: mainly layout pages.i copied them with designer.

Then, everyhting seemed to be working more or less right, but i am now unable tomodify the web pages. i get the following error:

System.Web.HttpException: Délai d'attente de la demande dépassé. (which means TIMEOUT)

and a little bit later (in the same second)

an SPrquest object was not disposed before the end of this thread.  To avoid wasting system resources, dispose of this object or its parent (such as an SPSite or SPWeb) as soon as you are done using it.  This object will now be disposed.  Allocation Id: {94A81494-DF99-4EE5-8AF2-1409AF884704}  To determine where this object was allocated, set Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWebService.ContentService.CollectSPRequestAllocationCallStacks = true.

Any idea where should i look into?

or if i did anything wrong?

thanks in advance

April CU13 unexpected version

Dear All,

Our SharePoint Server 2010 server (single server) farm is at this level 14.0.6106.5002. To my understanding it is SP1 with June CU 2011.

Now we would like to upgrade the server to level April 13 CU. I have therefore followed this linkhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;2775353 and request the hotfix.

The file I downloaded is 462150_intl_x64_zip.exe

Yesterday I tried to apply the CU and I got an error "unexpected version".

I believe that I have downloaded the right file to update the firm, but I'm not sure why I get the error.

Could you please help?

Thanks,

Edy

Hi,

When we try to import user profiles from AD we get following error:

System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.InvalidValueException: The property value was invalid.  This could be caused by invalid non-text characters.

at Microsoft.Office.Server.UserProfiles.ManagementAgent.ProfileImportExportExtension.Microsoft.MetadirectoryServices.IMAExtensibleCallExport.ExportEntry(ModificationType modificationType, String[] changedAttributes, CSEntry csentry)

It seems like it is some problems with the Accountname. But 17 userprofiles from AD is synchronized. I have looked in AD, and can't see any difference in the userprofiles. But something is wrong, because if I copy a userprfile in AD that is synchronized to sharepoint, the new user profile also synchronizes. But if I copy a userprofile that I get the error on, then the new user profil don't synchronize.

Do anyone know where I should start looking? I think maybe the error is in AD, but I can't seem to find out where. I know that there are no user profiles that have invalid non-text characters. So what's wrong?

SP 2010 Publishing - Rollup and Page Images not visible when entering page edit mode

All:

Hello, I have an odd issue recently appearing after installation of FEB 2013 CU install. When users select to Edit a Publishing Page the Rollup Image and also Page Image(Article Page Layout) are not visible. Only the "Click here to insert Image from SharePoint" link is visible.

  • The issue has be confirmed in 5 servers across two farms
  • DEV, QA, and PROD on client recently updated
  • DEV and PROD in a completely separate client farm

I have confirmed the issue does not exist in two separate farms running April 2012 CU. In both of those environments the image appears with issue even in Edit page mode.

In the farms where the issue exists you can click the insert image link and simply hit OK to see the image again. An easy enough work around for tech savvy but my client's content admins are very confused/frustrated by.

Is this a bug? I have confirmed in two separate farms including brand new web applications using out of the box publishing site templates.

Alert Me button disabled on all sites, should be enabled

When users (including site Owners and Administrators) try to use the Set Alert on This Item button, it says the control is disabled.  I did confirm that the users have the right permissions needed for Create Alerts.

However, if the user goes into Manage My Alerts and manually adds an alert for the same item, it seems to work fine.

This issue seems to be server-wide.  Happens on every Site Collection.

Any ideas?

I've seen another post which discussed that you needed to use all the same service accounts that were in the original system. I have ensured this and I still get the error. Also, just for testing, I have given "Everyone" full access to the backup folder where I'm trying to restore from.

Has anyone come across this?

Thanks,

kevin
