SharePoint Configuration Wizard Fails. Advice?

Good afternoon.  I have a 2-server farm (WFE/SQL).  We moved our WFE server to a DMZ on another VLAN,  opened up all of the necessary ports, and were able to connect.  Then, we changed from the default SQL port of 1433 to something else.  Since doing so, the SharePoint Configuration Wizard fails at Step 3 every time we run it, with the message of:

Value cannot be null.

Parameter: Service

What is odd, is that when I get to the portion of the Configuration Wizard where it asks for Database Settings, I can enter the Database server name's alias, click "Retrieve Database Names", and it populates the "Database Name" combo box with "SharePoint_Config" (Which is correct, of course).  If it wasn't able to speak to the SQL server, it wouldn't be able to do this, yes?  Because if I put an incorrect server name/alias in there, it will fail to retrieve a list of databases.

At any rate, after running it, it fails.  Windows Firewall is not turned on, ports are open from the DMZ to the Intranet (as well as all other common ports).  So far, I haven't found answers online, and am rather stuck.  Has anyone else experienced this, and if so - do you have any advice to troubleshoot it?

* I have ran CliConfg.exe on the WFE server to enter the SQL server aliases.

* The SQL server has the correct aliases set up to communicate on the new port (to replace 1433).
