No SharePoint sites. Default.aspx deleted

Hello,

I am having a very strange issue.

In the middle of the day, 3:00pm, my SharePoint sites stopped working. We found that we could ping the server IP, we can ping the load balancer IP but we cannot ping the url http://intranet.company.com.

We engaged our network team. They did some research and found that at 7:00 am default.aspx was deleted from our server1. We didn't notice as everything was failed over to our server2. However at 3:00pm, the default.aspx was deleted there. Now nothing works. I can't even hit the site by using http://servername. I also triedhttp://localhost, no luck.

Has anyone experienced this? What would cause the default.aspx to be deleted. If it is stored on the drive locally, where would it's file location be. I can see if i can possibly restore it from backup.

Also, on Server2, i looked in IIS and saw that the intrant - 80, website was stopped. If i try to start it, it tells me the port is in use.

Does anyone have any suggestions how i can get to the website. What went wrong and why the file would be deleted.
